5 Smart Tips to Help You Prevent Burst Pipes This Winter

on Friday, 30 December 2016. Posted in Blog, Water Damage

With winter comes the threat of freezing temperatures and harsh conditions in the St. Louis area. These conditions can often bring various hazards to commercial buildings, including burst or freezing pipes. When a pipe bursts, it can take a large toll on your business. The water damage can delay time-sensitive projects, damage important equipment, and close the doors of your business for days, weeks, or months.
Fortunately, there are several precautions you can take to help prevent your pipes from bursting this winter season. Here are 5 tips that can help protect your building’s pipes:

Keep the Heat On – It’s a smart idea to keep the heat on in your building at all times. Doing so will help keep the temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit in all parts of your building, preventing any freezing from occurring.

Insulate All Pipes – There may be some pipes that are unprotected in your building. Typically, these pipes can be found in unheated areas including the crawlspace, basement, and, if you have one, the garage. Take the time now to go through your building and locate any un-insulated pipes. Protect them with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves, fiberglass insulation, or heating tape.

Protect the Spigots – Your building may not have a spigot outside, but if it does, you will want to ensure that it is covered properly. We recommend using Styrofoam attachments instead of towels. These attachments can be found at your local home improvement store.

Keep the Water Running – We don’t want you to keep the water running always, but if the weather calls for extreme cold, it’s a smart idea to keep one or two faucets running slowly at all times. When you allow water to move through the system constantly, the lines are much less likely to freeze.

Get Your Boiler Serviced – If your boiler breaks down during the cold winter months, your pipes could be in trouble. Call in a qualified expert to service your boiler now before issues arise.

Even when you take the proper precautions, burst pipes can still happen.

When disaster strikes, make sure that you turn the water off and call Claria Clean immediately so we can minimize damage and get your company back and running quickly. You’ll also want to notify your insurance company and communicate with your clients and employees.
